ABOUT ME
ABOUT ME
Hello my name is Maribel Higuera a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. I am fascinated by identity and believe it is shaped by multiple factors in our lives. Understanding my identity is a personal experience that led me to become a Marriage and Family Therapist.
I identify as a Mexican American of Christian faith. However this has not always been the case. My journey in defining my identity was shaped by experiences such as immigrating to the United States at a young age, or exploring my spiritual believes in different contexts; these were experiences that shaped my worldview and how I responded to circumstances.
Because of these experiences I have been intentional in understanding the function of behavior through different lenses. I attended the University of California San Diego (UCSD), where I obtained a bachelors in psychology and biology with the interest of understanding how our biology impacts our functioning. I also attended the Marriage and Family Therapy program at San Diego State University (SDSU) which has an emphasis on multiculturalism and social justice. This opened up my understanding of the impact of society, race and other contexts on mental health. I believe mental health is multifaceted: influenced by our biology, thoughts, and our community.
It is important for me that when individuals, couples and families come they are heard, not judged, understand the stressors in their life from multiple lenses and may feel a collaborative support in their personal goals.
